Christian Johann Heinrich Hein was a German poet, writer and literary critic. He is best known outside Germany for his early lyric poetry, which was set to music in the form of lieder (art songs) by composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert.

He once said and I quote;

Where words leave off , Music Begins.

A Lullaby is a music which exists in every society and it cut across every boundary human civilisation has ever created.

Some even claim and rightly so;

It’s of the most calming things that societies have ever devised.

Example: Listen to this;

Since eternity, in almost every civilisation and culture we read and hear the mention of lullaby, mothers have careened, rocked and sung their little babies to offer a motherly love, calm resulting in a comfortable sleep.

What is so serene and tranquil in a lullaby that every mother in a culture needs is ? one must ask to self a question;

Is it just an instrument for a mother to put her baby in sleep ? or; It’s Something more than that ?

Another pertinent question to ponder is, why it’s so effective ? The child is not young enough to understand the meaning of those words but still craves for it and can’t sleep without hearing those words.

How does this magic happen ?

What is the message from mother to her baby while singing those lullabies ? What kind of dreams mother wants her baby to have when it is fast asleep listening to her lullabies ?

Most mother’s won’t disagree with this message in their lullabies;

Now to the final and most important and pertinent question for which I decided to write this blog by listening to this amazing song in the movie Gangubai Kathiawadi.

One must acclaim Sanjay Leela Bhansali for making this movie. It’s a biological portrayal of struggles of a madame in the red light area of Kamathipura and a bit more about mention of this and relevance in this article later.

The final question I ask to myself is;

What’s the prophecy from a neonatal’s perspective , who is listening to lullaby without understanding a bit of it ? or is it ? Are we sure that “It” doesn’t understand ?

The baby doesn’t understand what’s being said but the sound has its effect all the same.

Well, I can’t go and ask a baby to pose this question and get a first person account and answer so I make an conjecture , if it’s real or imaginary no one probably will ever know.

And the conjecture is;

The child is giving us an important message and telling us loud and clear that we are all born as harmonic and tonal creatures long before we are creatures of understanding.

As adults, somewhere down the line we unlearn and shed this tonal nature of us and become a noise or be part of noise.

Someone rightly said once;

The musician can, at points, trump anything the philosopher might tell us.

One more thing;

One can write a lot about this movie ie; Gangubai Kathiawadi and the sensibility Bhansali has shown while making it. But the whole essence of the movie is already captured in this poetic song and there is nothing much one can write without repeating what has been already said in this beautiful poetic song.

Kudos to the writer of this song and music director for making it live and transcending one to the world where one can transcend and empathise with Gangubai Kathiawadi and other 4000 women of that time.

And for female lead role enacted by Alia Bhatt just one thing: ❤️

The beautiful poetic song and music from the movie;
